It is well understood that in dialysis there are many different ways to treat patients and depending on who you are and where you live, you might as a patient, receive different approaches in the way you are treated. The different ways are not necessarily wrong, but it is appropriate, as in other disease areas, that there should be more agreement amongst physicians and others involved in the care of the renal patient, on some of the basic techniques in dialysis.
Some time ago at one of the EDTA congresses some research was conducted amongst delegates there and this very strongly demonstrated that there really is no consensus on many issues, especially as they relate to the quality of dialysis treatment. Membrana came to the conclusion that someone should lead an initiative that really focuses on quality patient management and they decided to do it themselves. For this I acknowledge their creativity. When Membrana approached me and described the 'Accord Programme' initiative I really was impressed and felt encouraged to be involved. So far, our endeavours to reach consensus on a variety of important topics in dialysis treatment have been quite successful. Nephrology Dialysis and Transplantation has published some of the papers from our workshops and we believe that these have been well received by the readership.
Together with colleagues from around Europe we will continue to explore treatment and management issues in dialysis therapy under the auspices of the Accord Programme and there will be other events taking place in the coming months.
