CELGARD® Hollow Fiber is available spirally wound on bobbins or in a knitted fiber mat on cores. This FAQ sheet is meant to answer some of the specific questions for both of those products.

Q: What is gurley?
A: Resistance to air flow is measured by a Gurley densitometer. Gurley is the time in seconds required to pass 10 cc of air through one square inch (6.45 cm2) of product under a pressure of 12.2 inches of water (31 gm/cm2). Two sections per spool are tested and averaged. The average of the six spools is then calculated and compared to tolerance limits. The inside surface area of the fiber is used to calculate the Gurley.

Q: What is a creel?
A: An entire production batch of hollow fiber is defined as a "creel" of fiber. Creel is a term borrowed from the textile industry. Each creel is subdivided into small groups of fiber referred to as "doffs."

Q: What is a doff?

A: "Doff" is another term borrowed from the textile industry. CELGARD® uses the term "doff" to refer to a set of bobbins of fiber that are filled simultaneously. A creel of fiber is large enough to consist of several "doffs" of bobbins.

Q: How is hollow fiber sold and how much fiber is on each bobbin?
A: Hollow Fiber is wound onto bobbins and bobbins are what we ship to the customer. Each bobbin of fiber is wound in 6 filaments. Specifically, each bobbin contains 6 filaments measuring 4.88-5.12 linear Km each.

Q: How is CELGARD® hollow fiber packaged?
A: Each bobbin is bagged, wrapped with bubble wrap and then bagged again. There is one standard box size used for volume shipments. Eight bobbins are packaged per box. There are 4 bobbins in the bottom and 4 on top and these layers are separated by a horizontal divider. The box dimensions are 16 15/16" Wide x 6 15/16" Long x 15 5/16" High.

A total of 24 boxes can be shipped on a pallet which has final dimensions of 41"Wide x 48" High x 52" Long.

Q: What fabric densities are available for CELGARD® membranes?
A: The number of filaments per inch determines the fabric density. Standard densities are 35fils/inch and 50fils/inch.
